About the Division
Nelson County is 474 square miles and conveniently located in beautiful Central Virginia. The county is 145 miles from our Nation’s Capital in Washington, DC, and 97 miles from the State Capital in Richmond. Within close proximity are several colleges and university that serve the community. We are honored to house the first 30 miles of the Blue Ridge Parkway and to host a multitude of hikers on the Appalachian Trail. The County is surrounded by the majestic Blue Ridge Mountains on the Northwest border and the James River on the Southeast border which is ideal for nature enthusiasts and those who love the great outdoors. Wintergreen Resort, a four-season “mountain top” resort, offers 45 holes of championship golf, seasonal skiing, snowboarding, and snow tubing. For those who love the seashore, Virginia Beach is a mere 205 miles away. Nelson County served as the inspiration for the television show, The Waltons.
